JOAN DIVER, Author
An elegant and moving memoir of extraordinary explorations into that ‘other’ realm…into the world of healing ministries, spiritual guides, and esoteric experiences…Those who remain enclosed in a world of “hard facts” will be challenged, for sure. But those who are open to another dimension, another world within this one, have a wide-eyed journey ahead.
The Rev. Samuel T. Lloyd III

Ninth Dean, The Washington National Cathedral (2005-2011)

JOAN DIVER
As the executive director of Boston's Hyams Foundation for almost two decades, Joan Diver was recognized both locally and nationally as a leader in philanthropy and social justice. A student of diverse spiritual paths and speaker from the heart, she has since offered healing to seekers, led contemplative and healing church ministries and partnered with her husband, Colin, in his roles as dean of the law school at the University of Pennsylvania and president of Reed College. Their family's story is chronicled in J. Anthony Lukas' Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Common Ground: A Turbulent Decade in the Lives of Three American Families. Joan Diver is a graduate of Wheaton College in Massachusetts. She and Colin now live in Boston. When Spirit Calls is her first book.
"With back pain as my guide, I have discovered the art of healing. I have learned that there are ways in which the fears and anxieties that hold us back can be lifted from us; that there is a flow to life that asks us to see ourselves as part of something bigger than ourselves; and that each of us is connected by a common bond that seeks the unity of all that is life."
—Joan Diver
Farewell speech to community and business leaders, 1989
When Spirit Calls, Chapter 9
WHEN SPIRIT CALLS is at once an adventure story and moving meditation that traces Joan Diver's odyssey from foundation executive to spiritual healer. Imbued with the teachings of spiritual teachers from both East and West, Diver shares a remarkable journey through family crisis, urban challenge, physical pain and spiritual awakening. Career woman, mother and subject of a Pulitzer Prize-winning book, she is led by extraordinary circumstances to healers and holy sites around the world. As Diver faces her fears, she unearths ancient wisdom and inner truths, while experiencing the healing of both body and spirit. Her husband, a law school dean, overcomes his skepticism and joins her as a self-described "stowaway" on her journey. An eloquent tale of opening the heart to divine love and one another, When Spirit Calls touches our deepest yearning for the voice of the soul and peace for the world.
